What is Body Mass Index (BMI)?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is an internationally recognized standard used to assess a person's body composition by comparing their weight relative to their height. Calculating your BMI serves as a quick screening tool to identify whether you are underweight, at a healthy weight, overweight, or obese, which can indicate your risk for developing various weight-related health conditions.
| BMI Range (kg/m²) | Classification | Health Risk Level |
|---|---|---|
| < 18.5 | Underweight | Nutritional Deficiency / Fatigue |
| 18.5 – 22.9 | Normal | Optimal (Lowest Risk) |
| 23.0 – 24.9 | Overweight | Moderately Increased Risk |
| 25.0 – 29.9 | Obese Class 1 | High Risk (Cardiovascular / Diabetes) |
| ≥ 30.0 | Obese Class 2 | Very High / Critical Risk |
💡 BMI Limitations for Athletes & Active Individuals
While BMI is highly effective for the general public, it is only based on total weight and does not differentiate between muscle and fat.
If you regularly engage in intensive weight training, resistance exercises, or high-performance sports, you likely have high muscle density. Because muscle is denser and weighs more than fat, your BMI may categorize you as "overweight" even if your body fat percentage is exceptionally low and you are in peak physical shape.
